Many people are dealing with pain on a daily basis. As a society we have been conditioned to ignore our bodies, to prioritise getting things done and to numb pain, both physical and emotional, with drugs and distractions. The result is that more and more people are living lives where their quality of life and enjoyment of life is seriously compromised.
When we do something for long enough it becomes our new normal. Pain is a signal that something is wrong and that we need to listen to what our body is telling us. Taking pain medication can assist with coping with pain. From a holistic perspective, a problem arises when pain medication is used to dull pain and disconnect from what our body is trying to tell us.
We are physical beings, as well as emotional, mental and spiritual beings. We experience life through our senses and when our senses are dulled through drugs and disconnection from our body to avoid pain, we can feel increasingly disconnected from the fullness and richness of life that can be experienced through our senses.
Disconnecting from our body, to avoid pain, can lead to a build up of further tension and stress in the body, which then exacerbates the pain and can increase the need for pain relief medication.
A holistic approach to pain is about learning to listen to the body and what it is telling you. Relaxation and meditation are used to increase relaxation and reduce stress which studies have found increases pain. Depression and sadness have also been found to increase pain, so a holistic approach to pain will address underlying emotions and assist with managing these. Guided visualisation and hypnosis are used to access your inner healing resources and to create new solutions and options that are life affirming.
