Most people have tried goal setting at some point in their lives and wonder why for the most part they do not achieve their goals. The conclusion is often that goals setting does not work and giving up on the goals.

I would like to share with you one of the reasons why many people do not achieve their goals and how you can tap into your inner resources to better achieve your goals.

The first reason that people do not achieve their goals is that they do not have clear pictures or images in their mind of themselves living their goal. When we do not have pictures or images congruent with our goals, it is difficult to achieve the goal because it is not congruent with our inner picture of ourselves. Think about it for a moment. Bring to a mind a goal that you have wanted to achieve but have not and notice whether or not you can easily visualise yourself being, doing and having this. I think that you will find that if you have not achieved your goal, you do not have pictures in your mind that match this goal.

Here is an exercise that you can try. Bring to your mind a goal that you would like to achieve. Now close your eyes and imagine for a moment that you have achieved that goal. Make this as real as you can, bringing in all of your senses – seeing, hearing, feeling and sensing as you imagine yourself having achieved your goal. What are you doing? How do you feel? What are you thinking? That’s great! Now practice this for a few moments every morning and watch what happens.
